After more than seven years since writing 365 Devotions to Embrace What Matters Most, I’m excited to share the release of my next book, Unto Life: Reflections on Both the Journey and the Destination.
Two Decades in the Making
Over twenty years ago, I started writing professionally. About two years ago, I decided to find a way to include some of my best writing from that span—along with new material—in my next book. The result is the title you find here.
Both the Journey and the Destination
The book settles the question over which is more important: the journey or the destination. I once discovered a tiny word within the biblical phrase, “unto eternal life through Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:21 KJV). I learned that the Greek word for “unto” wasn’t just pointing toward eternal life. It meant the beginning, middle, and end. In other words, both the journey and the destination.
Unto Life is an encouragement book—a traveling-companion for the spiritual journey. It says we don’t have to wait for heaven to start living eternally in the here-and-now. It demonstrates this by reflecting on topics like nature, the arts, spiritual growth, contentment, weakness, relationships, mission, life and death.
One reader has said: “This book is a rare find where personal journey, theological truth, and common everyday events mix together in a wonderful, satisfying stew.”
More Praise For Unto Life
“From the the author who helped us redefine the things that really matter in our lives comes an inspired and beautifully written opportunity to see God’s hand at work everywhere we turn. Unto Life is uplifting, relatable, and enjoyable to read, with authentic stories from a master storyteller, reminding us to stop and appreciate all that God has done.” – Karen Moore, author of Prayers from the Heart and It’s Still Possible
“John ambles through reflections on daily life in ways that keep drawing us deeper, urging us to pay attention, to see blessings that bloom through the realities and messiness of life. He brings to bear his wisdom as husband and son, pastor and prison chaplain, Bible scholar and dedicated churchman. His wise and steady voice conveys calm and contentment, painting a winsome and stately picture of what it means to live well.” – Arthur Boers, author of Living into Focus and The Way Is Made by Walking
“While I can’t endorse everything done today in God’s name, I do respect someone who’s on a journey for truth like me, someone who invites others to consider spirituality with a gentle tone and accepting heart. Unto Life is amazingly beautiful with descriptions that are rich and sumptuous. But most importantly, its spirituality is infused with love.” – Melissa Gilbert, actress and author of Back to The Prairie and Prairie Tale: A Memoir
“I am so thankful for this book. John invites us to join him in a beautiful conversation about the one thing that’s needful. In these pages, you’ll discover how anything—a dead cell phone, a recreational vehicle, even a romantic comedy—can offer you a way to grow in simple grace. I consider it a great blessing to fellowship with a conversationalist and wordsmith like John. Take a deep breath and relax into this exploration of how God wants to bless you along The Way.” – Fr. Anthony Perkins, Orthodox priest and host of the OrthoAnalytika and Good Guys Wear Black podcasts
Where to Get It
The book is available through most major online retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble (softcover on sale 11/26), Apple Books, Google Books, Kobo, and elsewhere.

To celebrate the launch, the book has been significantly discounted through December 13th, $6.99 for the softcover and only $0.99 for the ebook. I will say that most books like mine are best read and re-read with a physical copy in your hands. So, why not get both formats while they’re on sale?
Thank you!
Thank you so much for supporting my vocation as a writer, speaker, and minister. Far more than making a profit, my desire with this book is to connect with and engage others. I want to show God’s love and encourage people to enjoy the eternal journey toward him. Please pray for the release of the book and for God to use it for his purposes and glory.
